First Day of Roller Derby Boot Camp
Holy hell!
I was so nervous about going tonight. I was worried the girls wouldn’ t be friendly, and I was so scared that I wouldn’t remember how to skate. It’s been what 20 years since I’ve been on quads? Much to my relief the girls were absolutely wonderful, very nice, informative, fun and encouraging. My skating was something else… I felt like a baby learning to walk, but there was no pointing and laughing… at least not on the outside.
There was a some paperwork to be filled out but soon after we strapped on our pads, tied up our skates and hit the rink. We did a few warm up laps then gathered around the middle to start stretching. As we stretched we did introductions; stated our name (the vets also stated their derby name) and what had drawn us to derby. The answers were as diverse as the girls themselves, everyone seemed like amazing women.
For most of the night we just worked on skating and getting our balance. It’s something else watching the vets buzz on by, so effortless, so gracefull, so very fast! The other new girls were just as nervous as I was, and were super nice… I can’t wait for the next practice.
