Final Week of Roller Derby Boot Camp
I’m generally anxiety stricken before boot camp in general, I am not alone in this either (thank god) the other NOOBS confessed it too. But, nothing, NOTHING could describe the anxiety I had earlier this week in anticipation of our skills test.
I think I did well on the test though, considering. Well enough to join… maybe not participate in contact drills just yet, but that’s ok. I’d rather work up to it and not get hurt. The coaches are wonderful about that too, always watching us making sure we do things right, stressing the importance of each skill and genuinely not wanting us to get hurt. We lost one lady already, she broke her ankle. It broke my heart, I just loved her. She is the mom of one of the vets so I know I’ll see her around. She is TRULY an amazing human being. I hope she recovers quickly and comes back.
Anyways, boot camp is over. I made some really strong bonds with the other noobs and vets. I have a whole new respect for the women in derby. And I hope if you are reading this, you will go check out a bout in your area. You won’t regret it!
I’ll be eagerly awaiting my test results, and enjoying the holidays…. and trying to keep skating over the break. Actual practice resumes Jan. 5th. I can’t wait!!!!
